The Sokoto State Police Command on Sunday said it has arrested 14 suspects, after its officers raided a suspected criminal hideout in the state.

This was disclosed by the Public Relations Officer of the command, El-Mustapha Sani in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He said the raid was conducted on Friday due to incessant public complaints about activities at an illegal market known as “One hour market”, which he said operated daily between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Sani said, “This notorious market is harbouring suspected burglars, housebreakers, thieves and other petty criminals.

“Traders in the market are suspected to be dealing in stolen electronics, handsets, jewelery and other household items.

“That was why we had to act swiftly and burst the criminals’ gang, most of whom were youths,” he said.

He said items recovered were suspected stolen telephones, electronics and jewelry, adding that seven have been charged to court while others have been released.

“The raids would be routinely sustained and replicated across the state, to make the state more secure for all law abiding citizens.

“We are also appealing to the residents of the state to render useful intelligence reports to the security agencies.

“This is to enable the various security agencies to be proactive and nip crimes in the bud,” Sani said.
